Gunslinger talk for being honest but not being bullied! Scotty (guitar) and I (vocal) would trade licks in the middle which was always fun live…It seems like a rarity today. This track was live-off-the-floor so is essentially a live recording. I had previously tried recording the song with Randy Bachman. For the gunshots, we actually took a pistol (Randy's studio was in rural U.S. outside of Linden, Washington) and ran a mic cord and headphone feed all the way out into the adjacent field. Everytime it came to the "shot" we fired off the gun. When we went back into the studio and listened, the real gun sounded like a child's cap gun so we replaced it with a wood block banged on the stairs. As we were doing this, we were notified that the State troopers were at the security gate demanding entrance and to know what was going on. Apparently we had been disturbing the neighbours cows with concern it would affect their milk. We apologized. It was a waste of time. So next time you hear "guns" in a movie, you can be sure they are enhanced.
Hey! What’s the matter
why are you running scared?
Do like my daddy told me,
you won’t get caught if you’re prepared
& He said, “Son, as you go through this life,
Son, take a little advice,
Always play fair, and always play clean,
But if you run into trouble,
let ‘em know what you mean
Shoot from the hip. You gotta shoot from the hip
Be a straight shooter but don’t get burned
Don’t wait ‘till your back is turned just shoot from the hip
You gotta shoot from the hip”
Hey! Life’s a gamble, why live it all in fear
Do like my Daddy told me,
and your worries will disappear.
& He said, “Son, as you go through this life,
Son, take a little advice,
Always play fair, and always play clean,
But if you run into trouble,
let ‘em know what you mean
Shoot from the hip, you gotta shoot from the hip
Good guys don’t finish last, if they aim straight
and they shoot fast
They shoot from the hip
Be a straight shooter but don’t get burned
Don’t wait ‘till your back is turned, just shoot from the hip
You gotta shoot from the hip”
Hey what’s the difference,
when your back’s to the wall
You gotta come out fighting,
gotta come out standing tall
And I say “Son, as you go through this life,
Son, take a little advice,
Always play fair, and always play clean,
But if you run into trouble,
let ‘em know what you mean.
Shoot from the hip”

This song started as a theme for a television variety show which never got off the ground. It stuck around and I eventually added the bridge to give it more length for a complete song. Tom Colclough was in studio to do a track on a commercial. When he did it in one take, I thanked him and told him we were done. He complained, I’m just getting warmed up”, so I said I’ve got a song that needs a solo…”It’s in B. Just noodle til I point at you for the solo” I did & he did and in 1 take he played this incredible track which ends on a super high note and then with sheer lip power, he bends it up a 5th…that’s music speak for “holy mackerel! I can’t think of a better solo.
Everyone has their worries
Sometimes it’s hard to go on
And just when you wanna cry like a baby
That’s when you need to be strong
Hey don’t you worry
(Hey what’s your hurry)
Slow down and you’ll be o.k.
In the cool of the evening
That’s when the music will play
In the cool of the evening
Gonna chase all your troubles away
In the cool of the evening
Gotta let yourself go
If you let yourself drift away
You might discover tomorrow’s a better day
Life’s like the ocean
Carry you where you don’t know
Don’t fight the current
Go with the flow
You just might end up where you want to go
